My Lord! Increase me in knowledge

Why are we like this?

A few months ago, when i used to be on facebook. I remember someone mentioning his/her relative was very sick on their status. A guy commented ‘inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon’ which means ‘To God we belong and to him we will return”. Everything was good until there, then i read the next comment by another person, she said take back your words, you are only supposed to say that at someone’s death. They both started arguing.

Something about this was itching me, coz i remember that this dua is not only for anyone’s death, but to be  said in times of calamity, even when you have lost something and before jumping into the argument, i thought of doing some research and see where this dua came from. And found it’s a verse in quran and clearly mentions when this dua should be said – at times of fear, hunger, loss of wealth and basically any calamity.

Surah Baqarah, Verses 155 – 157.

And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sâbirun (the patient) (155) Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: “Truly! To Allâh we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.” (156) They are those on whom are the Salawât (i.e. who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided-ones. (157)

I pointed this verse to them, and i hope it solved their probem and they resolved. What i learnt was how ignorant we have become(including myself). No one bothered to search for truth and instead got into fights and started insulted each other. This is a major issue with the muslims of today and the reason why there are so many sects in religion. We just like to blindly follow what our families, socities or culture teaches us without taking a moment to analyze our own beliefs. This is ignorance, which is due to lack of knowledge.

I pray God gives us patience, knowledge and wisdom to react in the best way to every situation. Ameen
